______________
Join us for a special, empowering event designed for mothers and daughters to explore the transformative stages of life—puberty for daughters and perimenopause for mothers. This event focuses on embracing the changes both generations are experiencing, fostering understanding, connection, and mutual support.
For the Daughters:
Led by Konika Ray Wong of Girl Power Science (link to Konika bio), this empowering event combines TWO of GPS’s popular classes into one extended workshop. This unique workshop encourages girls and gender expansive youth to embrace the changes of puberty as superpowers. From mood swings to physical changes like breast buds, we’ll celebrate the natural process of growing up.
Through interactive activities, participants will learn to build body confidence with an attitude of gratitude, focusing on the strength and health that comes with growth. We’ll also make fruity, fizzy bath bombs—a fun way to promote self-care and good hygiene!
Our content not only promotes a positive body image but also strengthens media literacy skills. We’ll dive into the science of human diversity, exploring why our bodies come in different shapes, sizes, and skin tones. In addition, we’ll discuss how to cultivate a healthy media mindset—understanding the impact of AI, image filters, and unrealistic beauty standards—so our kids can develop resilience and self-acceptance in an image-conscious world.
Girls and gender expansive youth will learn about:
-Physical, social, and emotional changes associated with puberty and periods.
-Tools and techniques to navigate these changes with confidence.
-Self-care spa time, including our popular candy-scented deodorant guessing game.
-Normalizing variations in personal timelines and journeys.
-How to choose and use different menstrual products.
-The superpowers and vulnerabilities of each menstrual cycle phase.
-Features of different bra styles and factors to consider when deciding if and when to wear a bra.
-How to cultivate a healthy media mindset—understanding the impact of AI, image filters, and unrealistic beauty standards
Each Child Will Receive:
-Girl Power period kit perfect for fitting in her backpack for school or summer camp.-A “STEMINIST” tote bag.
-Handmade bath bombs.
-Autographed copies of “One in a Million - A First Book About Periods” by Konika Ray Wong, M.Ed. will be available for sale.
For the Mothers:
Mothers will come together in a safe and supportive space to talk about the often-overlooked journey of perimenopause. The session will cover the physical and emotional changes that come with this stage, from hot flashes to mood swings, to changes in skin and hair and your cycle, and offer strategies for managing symptoms. Discussions will also focus on how to maintain mental and emotional well-being during this transition and how to embrace this change as a natural part of life’s progression.
Special panel of experts will include:
Romy Havard, MS, DPT, OCS - Owner of Pergrine Physical Therapy, specializing in a holistic approach of orthopedic, prenatal, postpartum, pelvic floor, and wellness services, as well as pediatric pelvic floor therapy.Aimee Ruiz, L.Ac., FABORM - Owner of East Bay Acupuncture, the Bay Area’s leading practices focusing on supporting people with irregular menstrual cycles, PCOS, fibroids, painful periods, endometriosis, and menopause symptoms.
Michelle Dwyer, Holistic Health Coach and Certified Nutrition Consultant with a mission to support women in perimenopause through holistic nutrition, strategic supplementation, mindset support, and shifts in lifestyle (sleep, stress, movement).
The afternoon will be one to remember, as mothers and daughters will deepen their bond and foster a conversation for learning and growing together through all the changes both will continue to experience. Light bites will be provided, along with useful take-away resources to continue to support you both.
